Fishing Laws

Sometimes fishermen rant and rave about the stipulations put on fishing. They wish that they could fish anywhere, any time, and catch as many fish as they want.

While that was acceptable during the times of mountain men such as Jeremiah Johnson, times have changed. Laws have been created to protect the fish from extinction, to protect their habitats, and yet still provide an enjoyable experience for fishermen.

Fishermen are required to get a fishing license. However, states vary their regulations for licenses for children. It’s best to check with your state’s Wildlife and Game commission to see if your young children need to buy one.

There are limits on how many fish of a certain species you can catch in one day. Usually a beginning and stopping date is set for the fishing season. There are limits on the size of fish that you can catch and on how many fishing lines and hooks you are allowed to use. Even the type of tackle and fishing method is regulated.

There are several things that you can do to help the fish and game department do their job. If you catch a fish that is tagged, report this to the proper agency. (It is most likely identified on the tag)  If you don’t want to eat the fish yet you still want to fish, simply catch the fish and then immediately release it unharmed back into the water. When you have finished fishing, make sure you leave your fishing area cleaner than you found it. Pick up your trash. Properly dispose of the guts you have removed from your fish. Make sure your campfire is out.

Lures that Attract Fish

Lures are meant to resemble real fish prey and are attached to the end of a fishing line. Choosing a lure can be very complicated. A professional angler will tell you that the difference between a good lure and a bad one can make or break your chances of catching fish.

Lures are meant to attract fish’s attention with the color, movement, sound, vibrations and even the scent. Lures come in a variety of shapes, costs and sizes. You can find lures which have LED lights and glow in the dark. Some of the most preferred lures are grubs, crank-baits, top-water, jerk-baits, and plastic worms. The choice of a lure depends on factors such as the type of fish, water color, lighting conditions, the depth of fishing, and skill level.

For fishing at night, glowing and noise making lures are perfect. Since fish cannot see at night, using a vibrantly colored lure is preferred. For fishing in the daytime lures in the shape of common fish prey are recommended. The color of a lure has to be carefully chosen so that it does not look alien. Using a darker lure in stained waters, and a lighter lure in clear waters is considered a wise choice.

The weight of a lure is an important deciding factor as well. A correctly weighted lure will drift at the precise depth and move with the currents. Crank bait is usually used for deep water fishing. For surface fishing, a top-water bait or a spoon is recommended. These are tested baits and require little experience.

No matter how good the lure is, in the end the quality and quantity of your catch comes down to your pattern-forming skills. The movements and vibrations add desirability to any lure. However, choosing a suitable lure for the fish you desire to catch will increase your chances of success.

Different Kinds of Fishing Bait

Attracting fish with bait is almost synonymous with fishing. Fish are not attracted to a bare hook and strings; they are attracted by shape, size, sound, odor, movement and vibrations of the bait. The choice of bait depends on the kind of fish one is looking to catch. The kind of bait also depends on the fishing technique and fishing rods. Bait can be categorized into two types, natural and artificial.

Natural bait is further classified into living and non-living. Living bait is the most effective means of catching fish. The natural odor, shape and movements are what fish are used to in the wild, and they will be easily attracted to living bait. Some of the living baits that are popular with expert fishermen are worms, insects, small fish, night crawlers, and shrimps. Absolutely anything that is consumed by the fish and small enough to be hooked on to the end of the line is effective bait.

Natural non-living bait may include all of the things fish eat and generally have a strong odor. Non-living natural bait have the required optical and scent draw, but the movement needs to be delivered manually to mimic living bait. Edible food items such as bread, ground worm feed, cheese, chicken liver and other edible food items can be experimented with also. However, this is only preferred if live bait is unavailable, and is recommended for experienced fishermen who follow a particular fishing pattern.

Artificial bait is designed to entice fish. They are also called lures. These artificial baits do not represent natural fish prey. The vibrant color of artificial bait is easy to spot by fish and is more effective visually over natural bait. This results in quicker fish hooking. Many professional anglers prefer artificial bait over natural bait. There are a huge number of different types of lures with different advantages.

Important Fishing Tips

Every professional fisherman has fishing secrets that help him catch more fish. These fishing tips are what set anglers apart when facing each other. Fishing requires logic and reasoning. These quick tips may look quite obvious; however they are gained from years of fishing. Or, if you are a recreational fisherman, you can acquire them by way of research.

The most important part of any type of fishing is the gear. The fishing rod, line, reel, etc should be lightweight. Any fisherman will tell you the significance of a light fishing gear. Never use old and rusted gear, and make sure the gear is well oiled and the hooks sharpened.

Thorough research on the fish you’re looking to catch is necessary, including the fish prey and food, habitat, breeding season, natural hunter of the fish, etc., and will significantly help you. Find out from the locals what the best bait is. Do not go for lures that are too attractive and be on the look out for fish movements during different weather and the moon effect.

Moon controls the activity of fish. During certain phases of the moon, fish are overactive, which makes it a good time to catch fish. Making any noise while in the water will scare away any fish around. Fish like to stay under a shade during day time; hence fishing under a shade is ideal on a sunny day. Like the perfect swing in golf, there is a perfect swinging method, which one can only get by practicing. When the fish gets hooked, do not rush to pull it in, let it tire. Only when the movement has slowed, start dragging the fish towards you. This will avoid fish getting unhooked.

These are just a few important tips to consider when fishing; however there are many more that are available in fishing books or through asking your local master fisherman.
